Canada, India commit to restoring relations harmed under Trudeau
On Monday, both countries announced that their foreign ministers had reached “consensus on a new roadmap” for bilateral relations following talks in New Delhi. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand emphasized their commitment to restoring trust and strengthening cooperation across a range of sectors.
A joint statement said, “In keeping with the priorities that the prime ministers of India and Canada had set out for bringing momentum to the relationship, both sides, based on mutual respect for shared democratic values, the rule of law, and a commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, reached consensus on a new roadmap for India-Canada relations.”
The initiative follows a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada in June, where both leaders agreed to reset ties after years of tension.
Jaishankar noted that bilateral relations have “been steadily progressing in the last two months,” and said both countries are working to “restore and reinvigorate the mechanisms necessary to advance our partnership.” He added that, given global economic uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions, a “robust and resilient bilateral relationship” is especially important.
Relations between the two nations had worsened after the 2023 G20 summit in India, when Modi raised concerns about extremist activities targeting India within Canada. Tensions peaked in October 2024 when Canada accused Indian diplomats of involvement in attacks against Sikh activists, leading to reciprocal expulsions.
To strengthen ties, New Delhi and Ottawa announced plans to expand staffing at their diplomatic missions. The joint statement said, “The ministers agreed that their high commissions and consulates will strengthen institutional capacity by progressively deploying expertise in the economic, political, defence, and technology domains to deliver on the shared ambitious agenda.”
